INVEST IN LOSS

image189

It was what my Tai Chi Master said for twenty plus years to us during training ~ and I have a fair idea he mentioned it again during the ten years since... Somehow amid the Yang Style 108 move Form, Sing Yi, Pah Qua, Chi Gung, Levieco meditation and Indian yoga ~ as well as Wu Shu (Kung Fu), 'sticky hands,' Inner circle healing and Dim Mac ('Death touch') techniques, gymnastics, and all the various other elements he was expert over this intensive, almost a quarter of a century, were the words above...

He trained us this way, and drilled it into us the merits of such a philosophy. We were to deem more from falling and failing than if everything went like clockwork. In the techniques, we were to learn more about what was also going on, like our balance, our rooting, breathing and focus 'beyond the target' or challenge seemingly in front of us. We were to truly begin to understand where WE were during each instance. How were our shoulders? Was there a frown on the brow? How flexible was the waste, and how open were our energy meridians? These, et al were sought, and 'suddenly' (after years) I began to get it! In fact, it helped in my kick-boxing at the time, my Kempo Jujitsu, and even the military side of things ~ and without it I wouldn't have become the Pistol Champion, or any other sharp shooter award or group trophy. It became all about 'letting go' ~ and deeming so many things from and even during each experience, good and 'bad.'

Needless to say, I miss old 'Shrapnel,' as one of his many mistresses called him! I look upon him as an imperfect, paradoxical maverick ~ as well as having the Grand Master status he undoubtedly merited, despite everything. I celebrate his life, and I cherish the many lessons throughout that he wisely and humbly distributed to us. He had 'loss' in his own life, yet laughed like a naughty school boy! He had cancer a few times, yet did summersaults in the air in his sixties ~ just as he when when a gymnast and champion boxer. He was something else, and yet his wisdom was so incredibly down to earth that it defied any apparent merit it truly deserved. I write about him because so, so many have not had the privilege of knowing this enigmatic, 'ordinary' cheeky Chappy, this East End 'so and so.' For too many these days are reaching, grabbing and clawing their way in every direction out there. They are 'funnelling' and marketing. Their lives are all about leads, and uber motivation, and blah, blah, blah! This, while others (astrologists) say it wasn't about that this year ~ it was all about being introspective, and learning through clearance and loss... Oh, I declare to myself; and what a 'coincidence' right there!

IGNORANCE AT YOUR PERIL

image190

Whatever is ignored, WILL catch up with us... We often have choice; choice in what to eat, where to breath, hydrate, or how to think, decide, act and react. We can chose to forgive, understand; we can rest, learn and discover, and even pioneer! We can love, be patient, or even not... Our power is in 'discernment' and what we do in the short lifespan we have.

What we ignore, though, can NOT be ignored. It festers, it catches up, and it wraps its karmic tentacles around us as night follows day ~ sooner or later. We ignore at our peril. History screams at us not to make the same mistakes, but we do...

There are no short-cuts. There is no room for ignorance. There is only the acknowledged privilege of life in this time and place, the choice to see and be heard. With eyes wide open, we can do something wonderful, where possible, be it big or small; that is essentially us, and the soul within that we bring to this opportunity...

THESE ARE THEM...

image191

From '69, I've known conflict in the form of one of the longest and worst sectarian wars on the planet. It was only my 'introductory tour' of twenty plus years, without 'R&R! I was three and a half then, and first learned what it was like to be shot at repeatedly! Bombs, riots and much, much more were to follow ~ with fatalities of loved ones shocking in number and narrative... Within those first couple of decades, there was little to nothing I hadn't seen or known about that would or could ever surprise me any more. It didn't stop me going into further, even more specific (and intense) learning and experiences, however, and entering into an industry that doesn't forgive mediocrity in either focus or skillset. I took in amalgamated training from the military, to martial arts, bouncer work, including additional, more specialist training in which I learned things I won't get into. Further work engagements and recruitment took me to even more places around the world, and all in all, I'd say I've had any man's share of time served and dues paid...

What I know, though, is that each and every fellow warrior has been lucky! Not a single one of us has not seen or known better than us be taken from this world while WE somehow are still here. Whether we say it or not, we each KNOW it deep down. We were LUCKY! That ever so thin line between those worlds, for those whom have been exposed to near death a little too directly, cannot deny such a stark fact. What do those who REALLY know the facts of life do? I can tell you what they DON'T do. They don't brag or beat their silly little 44 or 46" chests. They don't laud badge caps, units, or quote locations they were merely LUCKY in for whatever amount of hours, weeks or months ~ where they quite possibly watched those better, burn and fall in beside them. The defiantly graceful and intact KNOW their allocated luck, their limitations; and they are genuinely grateful every day. They've now seen beyond the walls, veils and 'dead ground' ~ where now, for them the true merits and (toughest of all) responsibilities of life, love and wisdom they'd never even begun to envisage, truly exists and calls them.

Their journey was always to have gone and seen farther, to feel deeper, and do even more. They take on this extended mantle humbly, forever gratefully; and have the superior patience and courage of doing it from whatever semblance of 'young eyes' they have somehow managed to bravely protect along the way ~ no matter how rough it often got. THESE are the victors! They are the guarantors, luminaries, and special guardians. Their mission goes on that little farther ~ to light the way for others; to guide, to inspire, and to protect those other particular souls ~ even from themselves, while they are at it...
